Interesting, GM has used Allison for years, yet it is bad that Ram uses Aisin? as to refined shifting, our Aisin shifts smooth loaded or empty.
Ram went with the Bosch 4.2 for two year and then went back to the Bosch 3, and still make plenty of power.
Chevrolet and GMC used Allison transmissions because GM owned Allison back then and the Chevy/GMC were the first to install a medium duty transmission into their trucks and the shifting quality was second to none, but they did have some problems but nothing significant. Also the Aisin's that were first installed in the Ram cab and chassis trucks where actually failure prone more than people realize and the cost to replace one was really expensive.
I do not believe the Allison 1000 is a true medium duty transmission. That would be big brother Ally 3000.
Chris,
The 1000 was designed for 8600-19500 is class 2b to 5 trucks. Gcwr to 26000 initially. The 2000 series, a stronger internal setup, same case had two gear set options. The narrow band 3.1 to .73 of with the .63 in 6 sp versions. Iirc 2100 with a parking pawl and 2300 pawlless. Then the wide ratio, more common in 3000/Aision series with a 3.54 1st to a .75 od and .65 dod in 6sp. Iirc 2200/2400. Also ALL of these had a pto option. The gcwr on the 2000 was 33k later 35000. Pawl less ones were a bit higher gcw than with a parking oawl.
In GM you got the 1000 in 2500-4500, and the 19500 have 5500 trucks. The 2000 in the 6500 with 19591-26000 gvw options. Navistar used the 1000/2000 models in there V8 models too. From the 7.3, 6.0 and 6.4 engines. Not sure about current models. I believe FL used a 1000 for behind a few years with the Dodge V10 too.
Some of info I'm pulling out if the gray area if brain electron and memory. I could be incorrect to a degree or three about some stuff. From a discussion forum standpoint, I'm close enough in my book.
