F150 3.5l w\EcoBoost, MaxTow package

You were all very helpful with my last question about towing with a Suburban. It sounds like I need a little more towing capacity, though nothing huge. I'm looking at the F150 3.5l w\EcoBoost and the MaxTow package. Does anyone out there have any experience with that truck and care to share insights? Thank you all for your comments.
  • I know two people with the EcoBoost and Towmax. Both are towing pretty good sized travel trailers and one a 24 foot power boat with two large outboards.

The trucks apparently do well and no power problems. But in towing with a gasoline powered truck, you will get about the same fuel economy when towing as if you were using a large bore v-8 of like power. Power comes from gasoline and you have to put a certain amount in the engine to get the power to pull the load. There may be a small difference in engine efficiency and a slight improvement in overall fuel economy, but not a lot. You can only do so much with the thermal efficiency of an engine. They were getting about 8 to 9 mpg.

Running empty, lots of power and better fuel economy...provided you keep you foot out of the throttle.

If I were to go to a smaller and bumper pull trailer, oor a small 5th wheel, I'd sure consider the EcoBoost.

  • The F150 MaxTow with the EcoBoost has received many positive comments on this forum. I bought mine two years ago after reading some of those good comments. I opted for the Max Payload as well because I went with a crew cab and I have a trailer that is a fraction over 8,000#. That leave me right about 2,200# of payload.

The truck has performed very well for me. It has been a solid, stable and reliable platform. The EcoBoost does not have the same engine braking that I had on my 8.1L Chevy, but the integrated braking provides an overall better experience IMO (my 2001 Suburban had a good 3rd party trailer brake, but that really was not nearly as good as the integrated brake).

As for towing power the EcoBoost has been great. I have never felt under powered. In fact I feel I have power in reserve.

Whether running empty or towing I have come to really like the engine running at 2k rpm or lower. Makes for a more quiet and relaxed drive. The torque is very good and it has never had to search for the right gear.

Here is a run down on the kind of milage I see.
Running empty at 65 is around 19.5.
Towing at 60 is around 9.5.
In town short commute with a lot of stop lights (always out of sync) is 13.5.
Around town where I get to roll a bit between stops and traffic is lighter is 15-17.

    Good luck,
    Stu
  • I absolutely loved my 2011!! It was a great towing machine and if it wasn't for the high cost and crazy taxes i was paying on it i would still be driving it.
  • I suggest you check out some F-150 forums. You'll find out everything you want to know about this truck.
  • Mine is a 2012 F150 Crew max with Max tow and the HD package. We LOVE it and it is a comfortable ride. Tows our RV with no problems up and down mountains (no, not the Rockies, but we are at 2800 ft and surrounding goes to 5000 ft). If you have specific questions, PM me.
  • Don't have one, but our neighbor does...he loves it and it looks to be a really nice truck.
Consider ordering it with the HD Payload option also.
