To the OP, I've towed the nc mountains several times as we live in eastern nc and love mountains. We have a 28' bunkhohse, around 5k lbs. I used a 1/2 ton once and dont want to ever do that again, yes a half ton will do it, but it will tire you will keep worrying if you are going to make it. I now tow with a 3/4 ton and I am much happier and more relaxed. Ive used gm and fords, gas and deisel, they are both fine, and have used a ton dodge, which was the best (and newest) ive used. My advice get a heavier truck, bigger frame and brakes is as important as the motor and transmission, which are also bigger.
