Don't really follow your post. First you say you "Reached in and turned off the engine and topped off". Then you say you "Found out that if the ignition is on when you top of, the fuel gauge won't register correct until you run about 50 minutes.
So was the ignition off when you topped off? Or was it on when you topped off?
I had an '07 F350 6.0. When towing the 5er on long hot days at highway speeds and I pulled off to fill up I always left it running at idle to cool the turbo down. When I finished filling it up the gauge always showed full with the engine never stopped.
Same for my current 2012 F350 6.7.
