So was the ignition off when you topped off? Or was it on when you topped off?
I had an '07 F350 6.0. When towing the 5er on long hot days at highway speeds and I pulled off to fill up I always left it running at idle to cool the turbo down. When I finished filling it up the gauge always showed full with the engine never stopped.
Same for my current 2012 F350 6.7.
When I reached through the window and shut the engine off, I must have turned the key back only far enough to turn the engine off but not all the way back. I think that position is called "accessory".
