That tail with the notch looks like a separate piece . Have you contacted Fontaine to see if is removable ( bolted on ) ?
As far as the low rails it might be an advantage and give easier access for storage along the sides . It has no affect on mounting tiedowns .
Can not tell from the picture , is the inside of the bed flat ?
