I never heard of such a problem, but RAM recently installed the incorrect gears in some trucks so I'm sure it's possible the wrong tank was installed.
Like recommended above you may look on the tank to see if there are any labels indicating fuel capacity. In addition I'm not sure what your going to prove any different by removing the tank.
