Family across country road trip

We are planning a cross country road trip from Colorado to the outer banks of North Carolina next summer. We have a 2012 Toyota Tundra pulling a 31ft TT. I have lots of questions.

I don't want to have this trip booked down to the minute but want to find a campground (koa, good sams, etc) every night. Do I need to make reservations for each night or can we drop in?

We are thinking that it will take about 4 days to get there. I will only run about 60 mph or my gas mileage is horrible.

What advise can you give us?

Thanks,
Tom

Our experience has been that as long as you:
    1. stay at "non-destination" type campgrounds (not popular tourist areas), and
    2. arrive relatively early in the afternoon, say before 4:00pm local time, then
you have a good chance of getting an overnite spot by "just showing up".

I would, however, call ahead while you are on the road to the campground you are planning on staying at, just to make sure they have a spot for you.
  • I've just about finished (2 nights left to decide) a 2 week trip from Oregon to Colorado the middle of next month. Could have probably don't it without making reservations but still did as it's what I like to do. I used the Good Sam trip planner and found it very easy and useful in finding places to stay. You can select either Good Sam parks, private parks and public campgrounds. Good luck on your planning and trips.
  • Thanks for the advise. I look forward to all the comments about this trip.
  • At about 2:00, figure out what time you want to stop for the night and estimate where you will be. Then call ahead for a reservation. For holiday weekends, select a destination, make reservations, and stay put for a couple of days. We traveled this way for many years without a problem. By the way, if you wait until you want to quit driving for the day, everyone else has already gotten off the road and you may not get a campsite!
  • We never make reservations. Get the RV Parky App on your smart phone and as you travel it will show waysides, truck stops and more just call a head to see if a camp ground is full. Have a great trip:)
  • We travelled from April thru November for 8 years and never made a single reservation. We did sometimes call ahead a couple of hours before our arrival. We were never turned away from a campground. We didn't always get full hook-ups but did always get a place to park. However, we did make sure to get somewhere and stay put for the holiday weekends.

They way we travelled a trip from Colorado to the east coast would have taken at least 3 weeks. Most folks drive from Nashville to the gulf coast in 8-9 hours. We usually take at least 3 days for the same trip.
