You will need a rig with at least 2000 lbs of payload. Do not ask how I know, other than when my kids were teens, I had 4 of them ranging from 5'8 to 5'16", and we weighed in at 1200-1300 lbs. SO most lighter suspension rigs with the expy would be at or above gvwr, WITHOUT hooking up the 65--7000lb 24' long trailer I had.
We went with a sw 3500 crew cab. A van would have been first choice, most room, cheapest cost to buy. BUT, being as we used the trailer more in the winter as a ski hut at the local ski area(s), 4wd was a must. Not to manny 4wd vans with 8 lugs in the 25/35 series badged rigs, other than total high end custom jobs. More money than a CC pickup.
Burbs or the Excursion were out, too much $$$ for what we got. The pickup I could at least wright off as a biz expense, and the crowed part was not that big a deal. Kids new, if it was not this, it was not at all. WHile there was some complaining....overall pretty quite. especially when compared to the ext cab I had before the crew can. We did some 1-2 week trips doing some 2-4000 miles in that truck.
But as someone mentioned earlier, find a trailer, then match a truck to a trailer. You may end up with a 12K dual slide 30' something or other, and quite frankly, to pull that trailer, you would need a dual rear rig! All to handle the payload of the family, probably 200 lbs per person including clothes and other items, another 1500-1800 lbs of hitch wt. Are you taking bikes, firewood etc in the tow rig? if so, you will need that included in the tow rigs payload. You could be very close to 4000 lbs of payload needed, which is what my 05 Dually CC pickup could handle. My 96 SW rig was around 3000 lbs.
Just my 02 from 100K mil3es of pulling and rv trailer with a family of 6!
