Father/ daughter 89 Ford Ranger restoration complete (pics)

Well after 8 months the truck is finally done. Its been a fun project and she appreciates the truck after putting some sweat equity into it. We met many great folks along the way which I enjoyed immensely.Like the local bone yard owner, local saw mill owner who cut the oak for the bed. Numerous local people that we bought parts from via Craigslist. Bought parts from at least 6 other trucks. We also frequented a local drive line shop who balanced the drive shaft for us.
I think she takes away from it some hands on skills or at least an appreciation of the skills, pride of ownership, an appreciation of some of the local people/ businesses who we dealt with along the way. She has a awareness of the finances involved as we negotiated for lower purchase prices for parts which kept the project costs down. Most importantly it was the time we spent together during the project.
The truck is now tagged and her daily driver. It got a new life and she learned some life skills.
Cost involved: purchase price for truck was $600. All the parts including paint/primer which I shot myself was around $900 or less. So I figure $1500 for a first vehicle. Lessons learned during the process priceless.

Enjoy these memories, she'll grow up on you real quick.

Datson? Now theres a blast from the past! Wonder how many folks remember that nameplate?

BTW, OP---GREAT restore. Hope the DD enjoys the dickens out of it.
  • K9 handler. Really enjoyed your story and photos. For some reason I can't get Alan Jackson's song 'When Daddy Let Me Drive' out of my head..........
  • If it's the daughters truck, why is dad driving? :)

Great project, thanks for the update.
  • Beautiful job and you are correct in the last sentence that it's a priceless lesson. She will know a hammer from a screwdriver as she moves forward with other projects or a house and a family. Good parent and good job done.

  • Awesome job and I'm sure you two will talk about this forever. My father put a wooden bed on his 69 Chevy around 1977 and I still remember being out there helping him build itand I was seven at the time. Great memories.....
