I do understand the global economy concept but it is never good to see American jobs lost.
"Painful layoffs" can still be job neutral - and still be painful. As you said, it's likely company wide. Shifting jobs from one plant to another is pretty painful for employees at the plant being shut down. It's not very comforting to know your job isn't technically going away - it's just moving to an entirely different city, and it's not really "yours" anymore. Or that hey, we're laying you off now, but you can have your job back, in a year, when we're done refitting the plant...
That's the economy we've created. Go any farther, and the discussion starts to get political, so it's best left there.
