For those of us with GMC diesel trucks. How hard is it to pour a 2 gallon jug of DEF in the under hood fill area ? What works for you ? I know major truck stops have it on tap but what if I want to fill at home. Do you use a funnel or transfer pump. What works for you Thanks Jeff

The 2.5 gal boxes come with a spout that is 12 - 16" long.

I purchase my DEF from Wall Mart, usually is 'Blue Def". It comes in 2.5 gallon jugs and comes with a spout you attach to the jug. You have to make sure the spout is screwed on tight, if not, they leak around the threads. I always put paper towel around the fill port and drape some over the area where I'll be pouring to catch any drips. I also stuff paper towel in the overflow rubber funnel where the fill hole is.I always start by tipping the 2.5 jug just enough the flexible spout hits the fill hole and shove it in. I let it drain and then begin to life the jug slowly letting it fill. It's not rocket science, it's like filling gasoline into a gas tank with a gasoline can. I advise putting paper towel down over everything to catch drips. I never were gloves, and actually, I've never spilled or dripped any on my skin either. But I am careful, take my time, and don't let anything distract me when doing this either. DEF is very caustic. You don't want it spilled on anything. It will dry and turn kind like miniature white crystals. And even that is still very caustic. So clean up any spills immediately.

Maybe that's the difference in price .... the packaging!???You could be right about that, don't know how the Chevy fills but on my Ram I did not notice any difference in the spout on the WangMart brand about $7.99 and the Peak Blue DEF, about $11.99, and I've bought both in the past. The Peak might have a better spout but both have worked for me just fine. One thing I found out is that there is no "premium DEF", ie, one brand is not better than the other; it only has to meet a certain standard. It's kinda like when you buy isopropyl alcohol; buy the cheapest, it's all the same.

There is a learning curve. I didn't know the Jeep dealer was supposed to fill the DEF tank before delivering our 2014 ecodiesel which was the first one they had seen. By the time I found out, it didn't seem worth my time to spend 2 hours on the road driving to the dealer, waiting to talk to the people at the dealer, etc.

I picked up DEF in 1 gallon jug's at O'Rileys. Much lighter and less awkward.

If you are short it will suck. If you are normal height - over 6 ft lol, it will be easy. Short people's problems for sure. Seriously, it's not to bad. Just make sure you have the spout connect good and tight. I always puts some paper towels down just in case.

"DEF will degrade over time depending on temperature and exposure to sun light. Expectations for shelf life as defined by ISO Spec 22241-3 are the minimum expectations for shelf life when stored at constant temperatures. If stored between 10 and 90 deg F, shelf life will easily be one year."

The colder it is, the longer it lasts.
It does not like high temps. IIRCC. at around 100 the shelf life drops to 6 months... Since it gets hotter than that in Phoenix, and I don't go thru it very fast, I don't fill my tank all the way.

What is considered the average shelf life of DEF or better yet how about once its pored in truck. Would it keep ok in a cold garage over winter we are snowbirds and don't take vehicles south 6 months

I think it is more of a problem if you spill in the engine bay.

While DEF is DEF. It is important that it is fresh. Heat can make it go bad, improper storage in general can make it go bad. I prefer to use truck stops since they go through a lot DEF. I don't have issue with the fill location. I would prefer the tank didn't extend so far, but I have not had issue with it and I bounce around on jobsites every day.
