We had to make some decisions this week regarding the new living space over the upper bay. The boss really wanted to do a couple of inset balconies up up there, and I did my best to explore options for waterproofing it. Balconies exposed to the elements over dry space concerned me. A lot. It is possible to build what she wanted, but I just couldn't get comfortable with any of the waterproofing systems we looked at. The more I looked at those expensive beams, the more I wanted to protect them.
So, the inset balconies are out, but we were able to come to an agreement regarding this little deck. We never used it before, so we were going to do away with it. But now, we're going to rebuild it and extend the roof of the main house over it so she'll have some sheltered outdoor space to step out on. We'll add a two panel sliding glass door to the wall here to access it.
A sigh of relief was heard.

The lower bay got it's ceiling joists installed.

And then the rafters.

I put some plastic down over the sub-floor because we had another day of pop-up rainstorms.

The RV bay is just about in the dry now. We've got some shingles ordered. I've got some 10 year old Elk Prestique shingles on the main roof, which of course have been discontinued. GAF bought Elk a few years back, and their Timberline Hi-Def are the closest to what we have. They won't be a perfect match, but we'll live with it.

The entry steps got re-poured, and the boss is happy. These are very comfortable to walk up and down. The little diamond-tread step is just temporarry until I have time to rebuild the threshold so the outer door sweep has something to "sweep" against. That step is one of the few remaining vestiges of the old garage. I had just washed the concrete spatters off the door and wall, so the steps are wet.

The thing I'm most happy with this week is that the support post and handrail got installed! It turned out just as I imagined it. The welders did a good job on it.

The view from the lower bay.

Another week of progress!
