So, why do trailer tires need to be covered when not in use or they die in 3 years and I have 10 year old tires on my Jeep that have never been covered and they look fine?
Well, does anybody have any input regarding this?
Tires need to be used, the act of driving on them helps maintain their elasticity, a tire sitting unused will develop local "stiff" spots and this will promote cracking. Covering a tire helps reduce the effects of UV radiation, the UV will cause the exposed area to loose it's elastic properties and promote cracks also.
Your spare tire is also "at risk", just sitting there on it's mount "hardening" and silently cracking.. if possible, rotate the spare with the main set and do it and yourself a favor..
