Finding Vin and Year of vintage Aljo 18 ft.

Hello
i am a newbie to all this.
we have an older Aljo bought in CA with no reg. / title. Can't find Vin # on frame I have an Old license plate, really want to know the year and find the VIN otherwise i will have to squeeze it back out of the driveway and tow it to the ca DMV for them to verify it.
I don't want to do that. The only identification on it at all is an old plaque stating the following : State of California Dept of Industrial Relations , Division of Housing M-51 S-1568 3908 .
If anyone out there can help me decode this please & thank you for any help. Willie
  • The stampings may be covered with layers of paint also, you might have to sand or scrape to find them.
  • Vin will be stamped either on the A frame or front apron. Usually on the street side a frame.
  • Have you tried to track back through the license plate, assuming it actually belongs to the trailer? Depending on how old it is, the State probably has something on record related to it.

Trouble is of course that if the owner-of-record is someone other than the person you bought it from, you're gonna have some 'splainin' to do...
  • Many older trailers had a sticker on the drivers side on the aluminum siding. Many of these stickers faded, cracked and pealed off.

Sometimes on older trailers the vin was on a metal tag that was riveted on the drivers side tongue "A" frame.

Some instead may have had the Vin stamped into the tongue "A"frame on the drivers side.

Older trailers vin will most likely NOT look like modern day vins, instead it could be nothing more than a hand full of numbers sort of like a serial number..

A good rule of thumb, make darn sure there is a GOOD, CLEAN title before handing any money over.

In many states it is a major hassle to get a new or replacement title. I can tell you in my state no title means a death sentence (scrap) for a trailer if you are planning on putting it on the road...
