First post: Has anyone converted a medium duty to motorhome?

I've searched for my specific question and cannot find the answer.

Has anyone here converted a medium duty crew cab or extended cab hauler (i.e. FL60 sport chassis, Kodiak, F650) to a motorhome in CA? I know there are questions about what is required but those conversions are usually sleeper cabs or buses.

I want to take a MDT crew cab and convert it to motorhome by:
a) using the folding rear seat as a sleeping arrangement
b) putting a chem toilet in a storage compartment (with a tent cover)
c) mounting a cook stove and sink on a slide out tray in the other compartment.

Has anyone done anything similar and had it work?

Does it look like this would work?

Thank you,
Darin

  • Thank you very much for the info. I will check all those sites. I did have a chance to look at the HHresource site and found some good info on the CA listing, however the gentleman who posted last on that section misquoted the CVC codes on why it can't be done. This is what prompted me to post here. I want to buy an FL60 sportchassis but I will not unless I know for sure I will be able to register it as a MH/HC.

    Thanks again
  • You can also add a truck camper to a MDT if you want versatility. I think I would mount a travel trailer to a MDT if it was going to be a fixed installation.
  • Darin, on the Escapees RV forum we have an active group of MDT and HDT conversion folks. Since the vast majority of our folks are HDT we're slanted more to the heavy truck side and we call our web site the Heavy Haulers RV Resource Guide, but in most cases the HDT and MDT rules are similar.

if you drill down in the sub menus there, you'll find a state by state listing of HDT registration requirements and comments from those who have gone through the process (successfully or unsuccessfully).
Unfortunately California is one of the states where it has been hit or miss, at least on the HDT side. Some have been able to get their heavy truck conversion registrations through as a "house car" or motorhome and others have run into a brick wall. I'm just guessing that there would be fewer issues with an MDT, but a lot of the same rules apply. I had already left Ca for South Dakota when I bought my HDT RV toter conversion, so no personal experience, just what other forum members have reported.
