I made a couple mistakes with my first trailer. First is I thought it would be the last trailer I will ever need. Once you start to use it, you'll pick up on things you like and dislike about them. The average ownership of any particular trailer is about 3 years. Make sure you keep that in mind and get a decent price because you may want to trade it in a few years down the line.
The second mistake was I bought too big right off the bat. I was driving a half ton pickup and didn't like the feel of it while pulling. It felt like we were being pushed and pulled down the road. I ended up upgrading my pickup and downsizing the trailer as a result. Yes we sacrificed space but it's no longer a white knuckle stressful tow.
Good luck!
