I will admit there have been a handful of times in the past 12 years of owning the HA that I thought how much easier just backing the ball under the coupler is....The Hensley does take a little more thought in terms of getting the bar in the hole so to speak. Side to side off-level can be easily done buy using the jacks that tension the spring bars to change the angle of the hitch head.
Regarding lube, you DO want to lube the hitch. I use this:

You spray it on, and as it evaporates it leaves a white film of teflon coating behind. Less messy that grease and won't attract dirt. I spray the inside of the hitch where the stinger goes and the flanges on the stinger before I hitch up every time.
First couple of seasons I had the hitch I never lubed the stinger. Then one camping I unhitch at the site and the stinger had just enough rust on it that it froze in the hitch! I pulled the truck away thinking I was unhitched and pulled the tongue jack right off the blocks! Good thing it didn't come apart then! A few taps with a hammer broke the rust bond, but that got me into the lube regimen.
Also don't forget to lube the spring bars where they go into the hitch and the ball under the coupler.
