First Tow : New to me 2009 V10

All,

This winter I sold off my 2001 Ford Excursion with the V10 and 3.73 and 5-star tune. It did it's job well but I wanted the additional payload for other toys. Anyhow finally had time to pull the trailer from my brothers house to our new house.

I was instantly impressed with the off-the line pull it had with the trailer. The new truck is a 2009 F350 V10, 4.10 with Mike 5-star tuner. I was in tow/haul mode, engine grade braking was noticeable. There is an on-ramp out of my brothers that with the Excursion foot to the floor I would hit 45 about the time I was merging on the highway. With the new truck I hit the go peddle expecting the same performance and to my surprise I had to back off when I merged as I was going 65 and increasing quickly.

I know there is a difference from the 2V V10 and 3V V10, but man the biggest difference is the gears + transmission in the newer trucks. If you have a 2v V10 and been debating on the difference with the newer 3v V10 (if you can find a good clean one), it is noticeable!

A lot of that is the 4:10 rear axle.

Does it have the 6R140 transmission ? That thing is bullet proof.
  • Nice report, thanks. I don't think I've ever read a true comparison between the 2V and 3V versions.

The V10 is a great engine, among the best Ford has ever produced. We have a lot of them at the city I work at and they are truly dependable workhorses. As a matter of fact many of our Ford diesels are being replaced by them because they are still offered in the F450 and F550 chassis (thankfully).

I would have jumped on one for my personal truck, but they are very rare in my area in a F350 CC DRW Lariat.
  • Good report. You are better all around! You have more HP and TQ from Ford, better final drive with the 4.10, and the 5 speed auto. Plus the tune from 5 star really pulled out more performance.

The newer 3valve V-10's should give the diesel guys a run for their money! Uh Oh, I did it now!!!!!
  • X2 on the difference between the 2 and 3 valve engine. We had a 31' class C with the 2v and our new 37' class A with the 3v is at least as quick (or quicker) even with all the extra weight.
