Reddog1 , I read the entire thread before posting . I also read the entire link that I posted beforehand . I did not read anywhere of you sharing first hand experience , only a section of the law . Perhaps I missed it . You have mentioned in another thread that you have had 3 flatbeds in the past . Did they have a camper ? What was your experience ? My experience has been that knowing how the laws are applied in the field by the local LEOs is often more important than the actual law .
My experience is based on the fact I have had Flatbed trucks with TCs. Actually, I have had four flat bed trucks. One was a dually, one a tandem axle, and the other two were SRW. I carried TCs on all but the tandem axle. My current truck has a regular pickup box. It was about 1972 that I had my first flatbed.
The only place I traveled that had a weigh station was Cordelia California. It was seldom I went through there, and when I did I ignored the scales and was never stopped. More than once, I checked what the vehicle code was on flatbeds, and after reading the post in the link above, I do not think the law has changed since 1972. I gave my daughter my last flatbed and a TC on it. She had it changed to a motorhome when she licensed it. Much cheaper to license. She was advised to the laws on the license. Through the years, I ask several CHP Officers about it. Simply stated, they said the same as the link, but also pointed out if they saw a flatbed truck with a TC, they just ignored it, but also stated it was not a good idea to just ignore the weight station because they could cite you for not going through the station.
I have not ever heard of anyone being chased down due to going past a weigh station in a flatbed truck with a TC on it.
