Neither. Unless your plumbing is a straight shot to the tank, most of these products aren't very effective at cleaning the tank.
Correct. We bought a Hydro Flush for a previous TT and it worked reasonably well. Doesn't help whatsoever for our current TT and our built-in flusher is kinda okay but doesn't hit the walls of the tank and the sensors don't get cleaned off. There's lots of tank shapes/sizes and some outlet pipes exit the bottom of the tank, some the end and some the side plus there can be bends in the outlet pipe. If you have an enclosed underbelly you can't tell what you've got.
Below are some example tank configurations. Note that the sensors are on the same tank wall as the outlet pipe, or next to it, which means that no amount of backflushing will clean the sensors. If you happened to have a tank like in the 3rd photo, backflushing will accomplish almost nothing.
The Hydro Flush still helps though because you can see the contents flowing out and you can tell when the water is clear enough and has stopped flowing and can close the tank valve. It's almost mesmerizing watching it... :)
