Tires are so complicated now days.
Its really frustrating, to say the least.
One of the main reasons I ended up with 19.5s is how weak 17" ratings are, and what they are becoming. I also couldn't find a 17" wheel that was rated over 3600, and most are 3200 including the OEM's from what I can find.
I understand there is a federal reg limiting 17's and that is why tires are dropping from 37xx and 39xx to 3195lbs.
The NItta Terra Grapper is one of the few left with higher than 3195 ratings, but I don't expect it to last.
WIth the price of aftermarket 18" wheels and tires it wasn't worth sticking with a LT tire to me. 19.5's will be cheaper over 100K miles of use.
Ram's dont need 18's for the brakes, but they do need at least 17's.
Based on what I have found on tires 17's should go the way of 16.5's and FAST!!
Reason I have 17s is the wheel load rating of 4500 lbs!
Hummer/Cepek wheels
By far the strongest non 19.5"' wheel available 4 years ago, maybe still. They were expensive but safety first. Now I have these uber strong wheels with very little options. Why would fed gov't want to restrict loads in just 17"? Did they find that size isn't ideal for heavy loads or does some congressman own a wheel company that mfg 18" wheels;)
