For all you torque fans out there



A friend of mine brought this in the office the other day. I thought it was really cool. It should be running this weekend.

Specs:

16.5" rod

5" piston bore

6 horsepower at 500 RPM



That plays out to a whopping 60 FT/LBS of torque!!!! Over a 10 to 1 power to torque ratio!!! If an engine was built to those specs today an average small block would put out over 3000 to 4000 Ft/LBS of torque!!! :E This was done almost 100 years ago!!! (1924)

Check out the way they lubed the big end of the rod. It was an auto lube system and it would last all day.

At only 6 HP it couldn't do much work, but man could it twist things!!

    Same thing I see in the oil patch Arrow C series engines "one lungers" used to run pump jacks... putt putt putt Bang! Only one flywheel other side of crank is attached to a clutch to drive the belts to the pump jack gearbox. We run them on either propane or natural gas (from the well casing).

    No, it's just an engine. You could buy an engine from Sears right out of the catalog. It was up to you to figure out what you wanted it to do. A lot of them were set up to power houses with a gen set. This one was to power a BIG saw blade on a portable saw mill. I will see if I can get more pictures when he gets it running.


    A Sears engine who would of thought. That must be one big portable saw mill!

    Reading the subject, I thought this would be a thread about the Torque APP that some use to monitor tranny temp, check for trouble codes, etc. Instead you're talkin' good old-fashioned torque!

    Interesting story. But to give us an idea of the size of the piston, take a pix, with a penny or a standard sized pen, to place beside it. That is really effective in giving an idea of scale. A thousand words is worth one good pix.

    Measurement #'s are fine, but many people are visual learners...to emphasize scale...again...place a well known object next to the subject...in this case the piston, connecting rod, etc.

    Any engine can have a 10:1 torque/hp ratio. All you have to do is limit its maximum speed to exactly 525 rpm. ;)

    There are several shows in the area that have exhibitions of the hit-and-miss engines. Very simple machines.

    How neat!!! The muffler is cool, looks like some shower heads I've seen. I thought the starter was pretty good too!

    He called it an "Economy 6 HP."

    Here is one running. This is not his engine but he owned one just like it.

    As far as the stroke goes. I don't know? 3, 4"???

    I love the muffler on this engine. It looks so cool! I also love the shut off lever is right next to the fly wheel!!! LOL. Safety and lawyers be damned. If you were stupid or weren't paying attention in those days you got hurt or killed and it was YOUR fault; not the engine manufacture.
