You can't make a 3/4 ton beefy enough to tow a 17K GVWR 5er, maybe if it had a 6K payload you could only load about 2K into a 11K dry weight, but those are few and far between. With gas you would need about 5.30 gears and a big wallet for fuel.
Worried about cold starting, get a Ram with a Cummins, they don't use glow plugs, it uses a device called a "Grid heater", it is a single device that heats the incoming air to the intake manifold.
Mileage, depends on your commute, I was getting about 15 mpg with a 5 mile commute to work, and I can easily get 20 mpg empty on the highway doing 65 to 70. while to tow 17K with a gas engine you would likely need 5.30 gears and mileage towing would likely be at about 5 mpg, doing that with a diesel more like 9 to 10 mpg.
