I just became a TT owner a year ago. I am a 51-year-old mom, wife with older children and a six year old. Anyways, always wanted a camper so I bought one last year, a Trail-Lite 17 foot Bantam and tow it with a Ford Explorer. I decided to venture a little further with it this year, going a whole two hours away from home. On my way north on busy interstate, I had a tire blow out. I apparently did not notice it right away (I believe I was distracted by my six year old) as my trailer always towed kind of bumpy. The torn rubber from the blown tired whirled around like a saw, eating a huge hole in the floor of my camper, eating through electrical wires, water lines and propane lines.Destroyed a microwave that was on the floor of the closet it ate through. There was flying wood, glass and metal. I was told by repairman the next day that I am lucky I did not catch on fire. Thankfully also I did not lose control or cause damage to another car.
I am almost embarrassed to tell this story....apparently I am not the independent woman I thought I was. But I wanted to share it with other new RVers. Needless to say, I will not tow any more trailers. I am looking into a seasonal site now as I do not want to give up.
This brings me to two questions:
1. Give me some suggestions on quality brands of TTs I should look at with very durable construction. I live in Wisconsin ... harsh winters.
2. Do they not make wheel wells on TTs that prevent this type of situation from happening?
I loved my little Trail Lite but doing this solo without my husband just isnt going to work. :>(
