Ford 2021 exhaust brake.

We crossed Wolf Creek Pass last Oct on our way to GCNP. Oh how I've heard over the years how scary it could be. Piece of cake with our 2017 F350 DRW 4:10 rear end pulling 20,000 DRV.
Cruise on, Tow Haul on, Engine brake on. Wife complaining how slow we were going.
We have done 10% up amd down with no problems ??.

The exhaust brake and the options for larger fuel tanks are the only two things that make me consider a diesel over a gas engine for my next truck.

That is good news. I know my 2011 Powerstroke was considerably better at holding my trailer back than was my 03 Duramax but to call what it had an exhaust brake might be a bit of a stretch. My 2016 Powerstroke was a big improvement over the ‘11. I thought the 2017 was maybe about the same as the 2016, but maybe it was better again.... I just can’t remember exactly. (My 16 would be identical to your ‘15) One thing I’ve noticed with the ‘21 is that it doesn’t seem to build boost when braking the same way the ‘17 did.

Diesel engine exhaust brakes (valve in exhaust stream or variable geometry turbos) and compression release brakes (“jake brakes”) offer more braking hp as rpm increases.

Gearing down out of overdrive gears and lower rear ratios increase the effectiveness of engine braking.

Hydraulic and electro magnetic retarder do not rely on engine rpm but lower rear axle ratios make them more effective as well.
