Smaller rods doesn't mean less strong anymore. Material and profile advancements both allow for stronger rods, while making them smaller. The smaller rods have a few advantages including less reciprocating mass and more flexibility in piston skirt design. Tognum (parent of Detroit/Mercedes Diesel) started doing it first in about 2008.
Ceramic bearings are a no brainer. Heat doesn't hurt them.
