7.3 Powerstroke is about as good as it gets, long term. Many of the smaller, more heavily boosted V8 diesels will beat it in a drag race, but will cut back on power when overloaded too long, and have not been around long enough to say how they do with everyday loads.
Next best thing to 7.3 with turbo would be the 5.9 Cummins turbo diesel, when rated 160-190 HP. It will put that out forever. Boost it up to 300+ HP? Something less than forever.
Higher output turbodiesels for pickups? 6.6 Duramax defines the category, Cummins is trying to get there with higher ratings for the 6.7, similarly Ford with latest Powerstrokes. Be aware, any of these engines, when put into medium duty trucks where power ratings are for 24-7 duty cycles, get substantially downrated. Back to where we were with 7.3 Powerstrokes, 7.3 IDTs, and 190 HP 5.9!cTDs.
If you can find a good 7.3 Powerstroke, go for it.If you have one, keep it. Unless you are going into pickup truck drag racing, where you need something that will give you a whole lot more boost for 12-15 seconds.
