Any gasser will need to rev more, so if that's a problem for you, than the diesel is your best pick.. Meaning, if you don't like revving over 3000+ rpms on the grades, you need the low end torque of the diesel (any diesel for that matter)
Now, my Ecoboost will haul my little #5000 TT up the grades in 4th gear (6 speed auto trans) doing about 2500 rpms going an easy 60 mph. (still lots of pedal left if needed).
My old F150 with a 5.4 and 4 speed auto would need around 3500 rpms in second gear and was not to the floor, but didn't have much left..
Technology has made up for a lot of "time" in terms of engine size and trans gears have made a huge difference too..
With any 7.3 PS, you'll get the E4OD or TR100 trans 4 speed.. Or, if you can find one, a manual ZF 5 speed, which is a very strong manual trans and about the only one you want in that era..
Anyway, I'd tow a #7500 TT with my F150 and not think twice about it..
Good luck!
