Original poster here. Thanks for the replies. I would consider a newer gasser but would probably not consider a gm product after my last gm.
I could pick up a 2 year old super duty 6.2 4x4 gasser with under 70k miles for under $30k. I wonder would that be less if a headache than an older 7.3 diesel?
Then you would definitely be better off sticking with your Toyota. The GM 6.0L gas engines have been the class of their field.
The GM 6.0L has NOTHING over the Ford 6.2L. We have several Ford 6.2L trucks at my work which get driven hard and have yet to see the first problem with any of them. They also have very good performance for their displacement.
To the OP, the 7.3L is the best diesel Ford has ever put in a truck by far. Personally I would opt for the F-350 and a 6 speed manual transmission if possible to give you the extra GVWR and eliminate the transmission problems. The 7.3L with the ZF6 transmission was a sweet combo and I looked for one for a long time before buying the truck in my signature. I think you would be very happy with the performance and fuel mileage of the truck over what you have. Saying that, if you can find a newer 6.2L gas truck I'm sure you would be happy with that as well but it won't get nearly the fuel economy of the 7.3L.
Call me when your 6.2L has 17 years of proven track records.
