Ford advance trac trouble- heads up for owners

Advance trac is their antilock brake system. I started getting erratic error messages on the message center 18 months or so ago. I took it in to one of the local dealers here in N. Florida, Santa Fe Ford. They kept it a couple hours and reported that they could not find a problem. They didn't look very hard IMO.

A few months ago the problem converted to a continuously on light and message. This time I took it into Parks Ford, there were a couple of other minor problems too.

Well it took them 8 days before they fumbled their way to a fix which involved replacing several computer modules and a number of sensors. All from the the seat restraint and air bag systems?!

I heard from a couple others on the Powerstroke forum that they had warning lights and messages too. One said that the dealer had it for 3 days and replaced the under the dash wiring harness, or at least one if there are more. The diesel mechanic who runs that forum says he has seen frayed wires or a fail mass air sensor causing an advance track problem.

So this is just a heads up to other post 2011 F250/350 owners to be aware of the possible problem. This is the first biggish problem that we've had. We did have a blown hose on the turbo which is the only other trouble we've seen on the truck. Since several others reported they were having problems with the system on the small PS board it may be fairly common. But seemly with varied mysterious sources for the trouble.

Thank God for the extended warranty since 8 days in the dealer shop and 2 pages of parts only cost us $100. They replaced the EGT sensor too, while they were at it.
  • Had the same problem in my Explorer but my dealer fixed it in a day...well technically two because they had to wait for the part. I'd wonder about the competency of your dealer if it took them 8 days to figure it out. I knew what the issue was before even taking it in just by doing some google searches prior to taking it in, and they knew what the problem was right off the bat as well.
  • We never had the Service Advance Trac warning just a traction control active light. It would come on randomly and stay on constantly till the key was cycled. My bride was driving it the first time it came on. After a couple weeks of on and off she said it seems like it’s hopping in the back when the lights on. I was looking to see if the rotors showed any damage from TC applying the brake when I noticed the tire.
Put the spare on, 18 in versus 20 and it still tripped once or twice. Put new Michelin LTX MS2’s in 20 in size and no issues in about 500 miles.
  • More correctly stated, AdvanceTrac® is part of Ford's Antilock brake system. There are a couple of different versions depending on the vehicle and model year.

Any dealer who starts "shotgunning" parts like computer modules likely does not have any trained/experienced technicians. A new computer module rarely cures any electronic system problem.

Besides, Ford diagnostic procedures always call for an A, B, A swap. The original suspect module is replaced with a new module and then the repair must be confirmed. Even if the repair is confirmed they wabt the tech to reinstall the original module just to confirm that it truly was defective and just wiggling wires did not fix the problem.

I would never leave any vehicle at a dealer for more than 2 or 3 days with out a good explanation. If the problem comes back, ask to see the service manager and STRONGLY request that the regional service engineer look at it. BE FIRM ! This will take days to weeks.
  • I checked went over to the Ford Truck Enthusiasts HD forum and found 8 mentions of the 'service advance trac' warning messages in the first two pages of an advance trac search. And there were a lot more than 2 pages. A couple mention that the wiring harness above the emergency brake can be the problem, make sure it's plugged in firmly. Another mentions that there is a 60 page thread on the F-150 forum. So it may not be isolated to HD trucks, think I saw one message about a Navigator too.

So it is happening, hopefully not commonly, but enough to rise above background noise.

    Interesting....

As for the OP this is the first I've heard of this problem, but I recently had to have 2 EGT sensors replaced due to a CEL on my '12 which is a common problem.
  • Charles Ledger the diesel mechanic I mentioned above mentioned that anything that causes the wheels to skip will cause the brake-warning light to come on. I don't know if that includes the message center alert.
