Ford aluminum body reduces repair cost

1)Ford F-150 (31.8% below average)
2)Ram 1500 (14% below average)
3)GMC Sierra (10.7% below average)
4)Chevy Silverado (10.3% below average)
5)Toyota Tundra (8% below average)
6)Nissan Titan (13.5% above average)

Since all of the trucks are below average I assume that the baseline is all vehicles on the road though I don't see that stated in the article.

Pickup insurance costs

It looks like Edmunds jumped the gun on the risk of aluminum.

Edmunds test

One thing that I find interesting is that the F150 had more of the expensive stuff that Edmunds broke than other brands during this time period and still come out well.

The Edmunds test was flawed from the beginning. 1. Didn't shop for price, 2. did not go through insurance so the shop charged full bend me over rate, 3. no control (did not have a comparable steel body repaired).

All they successfully did was got that vehicle repaired with no comparison to anything.

You are absolutely correct but it sure did get a lot of press coverage.
  • But the numbers came from Highway Loss Data Institute, not Edmunds testing.
