Ford and GMC to produce new 9 and 10 speed transmissions

This is a link to the press release.

Ford and GMC to jointly develop new 9 and 10 speed automatic transmissions for both front and rear wheel drive vehicles. Using common parts in both will allow lower prices due to scale of transmissions being built.

So all the 2014 trucks with only 6 speeds will need to be replaced with the newer 9 or 10 speed trucks that will come out in a few years.

  • Why would the vehicles be slower on steep grades? I would expect them to be faster on steep grades since the engine speed would be better matched to maximum output with more gear ratios available.
  • Almost 2 years ago I made post wondering why they didn't make multi speed trannys like in tractors. The vehicles would be slower on steep grades but overall have a lot better economy. A 10 speed in a V10 MH would be great.
