Speaking of values here is a snippet of a recent local auction diesel selling prices. I do see the older 6.0ls selling for less than others but if you compare the 2 2004's (Chevy and Ford) not a huge difference. They certainly ain't giving them away here:

I am not saying the engine's are without problems lol you can look at my signature and see I addressed a few things just the notion that you can't sell these or that they are "giving them away" at least in my area this doesn't hold true.
To the Badhbt I can understand their frustration having engine problems at 28K in ANY vehicle. My opinion 3.8K is way to much for EGR and oil cooler replacement. Most shops incl some Ford will do the complete bulletproofing incl gaskets, head checked, improved oil cooler and EGR cooler (or delete) for about the same price (or a little less) and warranty it. If you decide to keep it and fix it make sure they are really competent with the 6.0L's.
