Ford Excursion/SD brake recommendations

Hello,

I am on my 2nd Ex and the brakes are going to get replaced soon (pulls to the left). With my first EX I went with factory OEM pads/rotors because it was at the dealership and I although I read that factory rotors used to be prone for warping I thought my brakes worked good except on my first trip out towing my TT going down a big hill in TN on my first strong application of brakes the pedal started to vibrate from what I assumed what rotor warpage because of heat and I noticed some brake fade. It had me really concerned because I wasn't riding the brakes and if I needed more stopping power it might not have been there. I drove that truck for 10K after that with no brake problems but I always remembered how they were on that high demand application. What are some recommendations of rotors and brake pads for an occasional tow vehicle?

  • I am slowly coming to terms with the facts of the GVW and payload numbers.
I once towed a 31BHDS TT with a PSD Excursion. It was a fantastic combo.
Very stable and solid in all conditions even though I was quite a bit over my GVW towing a 10K loaded TT.
I replaced breaks regularly and accepted it as a way of life.
In hindsight I have come to recognize that towing beyond your ratings may not be dangerous day to day but it will cause parts to where prematurely.
I was replacing brakes regularly because I was towing a heavy trailer regularly.
My current truck is more in line with the factory ratings and my maintenance cost are noticeably better. Wear items like tires and brakes are lasting longer.
Don't get me wrong the X is a great TV, in some ways I still miss it. If I had the same TT I would get another X in a heartbeat, but the bottom line is the GVWR numbers do have meaning and consequences.
Exceeding the ratings may not put you in harms way on a daily basis but you will more than likely wear out consumable parts prematurely.
As long as you tow a with your current combo you will be wearing your brakes prematurely. This is a lesson I learned in hindsight, while I was towing with the X I was unable to see the forest through the trees!
  • Yep. Power slots and hawk pads. And when doing the brakes be sure to lube the caliper slides and clean and lube the areas where the pads and hardware sit in the caliper brackets.
  • I went with Power Slot rotors and Hawk LTS pads on the X and replaced the wheel bearings at the same time. The factory bearings on the 4wd only last about 150k. There was an upgrade list on this forum a year or two ago on upgrades to the X.
  • Spend the money, if possible, and get the fluted rotors (available everywhere). It won't eliminate the possibility of warpage, but will greatly diminish it. Plan to spend a little over $100 per rotor. Get a good set of lifetime pads (ha) and change them occasionally.
