Wise advice above, let's take a quick look at the Expedition itself.
From the 2011 brochure page (4) addresses towing;

The 5.4L does it's best work in medium to higher RPM.
310 HP @ 5,100 RPM
365 FT/Lbs torque @ 3,600 RPM
Generally speaking to get the most out of that engine, you want to be at or above the max torque rpm and "in the neighborhood" of your max HP rpm at the same time when pulling heavy, or in the hills. i.e. 4,000+ or so would be fine. The 5.4L likes to rev, put it to work.
Also check your VIN here to see what gear ratio you have, higher number is better. 3.21 vs 3.73. (you'll get every other build detail on your truck as well).
