I dont see it? Carrying around another 500 pounds, cost, letting it get contaminated with moisture, all for what? Save three cents at the pump? Drive an extra 300 miles? My backside is ready for a break after 300 miles, and there is always fuel available in that distance. Except maybe on the ice roads of northern Canada.
I would agree, unless there is a big reason to carry that much fuel, why bother, and the room lost in the bed. Never have had an issue with just 30 gallons, and been all over the west in some long stretches.
I usually have no problem going 250-300 towing, but I see no need to go that far without stopping, so why haul all that fuel.
