Found a new tow vehicle..Opinions on buying warranty

One thing I forgot to say... The major advantage to an after market warranty is the dealership can not pass off the issue as normal.

I used my after market warranty for the smallest oil leak possible. Wind noise from the driver door seal, etc, all fixed without question. I think a factory warranty would write off those issues as normal or let us know if it gets worse.

I had an aftermarket "easy care" warranty. I got it free. The guy who owned the car before me purchased a 3 year warranty and sold me the car after 1 year.

I would not purchase one of these warrantees. It was more hassle then its worth. No repair shop would let the warranty company pay for the repairs. I always needed to pay out of pocket and then the warranty company would write me a check. The check never was the exact amount I paid (less the detectable). Shop supply's were not covered for some reason. The dealer also had to get the repairs approved by the warranty company. Some shops were more willing to make the phone call then others.

All and all the warranty did save me around $4k. Most of the repairs were stupid things that I wouldn't have fixed if I needed to pay the repair bill (gas gauge slightly off, minor noise, etc).

A long time ago a mechanic told me something that I've come to believe. The engines and transmissions in most vehicles these days are pretty reliable. It's all the add-ons that will cost you money - AC units, alternators, electronic fuel injection systems, turbos, in-cab electronics, etc. So first I would ask what you mean by 'major components'.

Remember that down here in Florida, the AC on that truck was probably running for most, if not all, of those miles shown on the odometer. How much does an AC compressor cost these days ? Just a thought.

I know nothing about the warranty company in question and have never bought an extended warranty until I purchased my current vehicle. I bought the extended Ford factory warranty that cover EVERYTHING for 7 years or 120,000 miles. I treat this purchase the same way I do as buying home insurance or car insurance - I may never need it but the small amortized cost per mile is worth the peace of mind. And before anyone starts bashing Fords, I will just state that if I had an extended warranty when the turbo failed on my Duramax at 5000 miles outside the factory warranty, then I would not have had to pay $3500 to replace it. I see these extended warranties as insurance. Sometimes you need and use them and sometimes you don't.


These modern trucks are just so complex and so expensive to repair compared to anything I drove in the 60's/70's. Back then all you saw was a carb on top of the block and an alternator hanging off the engine. And I'm old enough to remember that many (most ?) vehicles came with no AC - it was an option, or just not available at all.

I would always much prefer to buy a factory extended warranty just because it will be accepted with no questions.

You have a different truck with many known problems. You were smart to do as you said.

I would say take the $1600 you would spend on a 4 year warranty and put it in the bank incase you need a fairly major repair. Use parts of that money over those four years to keep up on proper maintenance/fluid changes. That is your best warranty right there. If you don't need anything after 4 years you came out ahead $1600.

No on the aftermarket "fake warranty". Yes on Manufacturer offered extended warranty if available.

Read the actual contract, not the sales brochure, to fully understand what is and is not covered and how warranty claims will be processed. After doing that, I doubt you would even consider a "warranty."

The dealer will put a lot of pressure on you to buy the "warranty" because they make tons of money from the sale, probably more than on the sale of the vehicle.

The only "warranty" purchase you should consider is on from the vehicle manufacturer. Aftermarket "warranties" are usually a very poor value.

The best money you can spend is getting a pre-purchase inspection from a qualified technician.
