Fresh water tank questions

We normally camp where city water is available.Should we be leaving the fresh water tank dry , or leave a few gallons of water in there to keep the seals wet ?
We have left a few gallons in the tank. We will need to use the tank in a few weeks. I'm guessing we should sanitize the tank before we use it since the water has been sitting in there for about 2 months .
  • I drain my tank when I get home. Before hitting the road, I put some water in the tank so I have water if I need to "use the facilities" while traveling. I sanitize the tank at the beginning of the season, and don't worry about it during the season because I'm putting chlorinated water in the tank. And, I tend to carry bottled water for drinking water when the water at the campground is not so great for drinking. The key is to not carry too much water because of the weight!
  • Having an RV at home with fresh water in it. Can come in handy should a storm or other disaster strike. Depending where you are located.
  • we never leave water in ours unless we are going dry camping, which we rarely do. no issues for us. when going on longer road trips we take a gallon jug of water to use after using the toilet. which we only do in emergency- i have kids.
  • We travel with about 1/4 tank min. We don't always make it to a campground that has water. We use the facilities while on route.
  • I drain my fresh tank and leave my drain valve open, unless I actually have water in the tank I'm using. Never had a problem, and never had to sanitize. When we lived in town, the chlorine content in the city water was enough to always keep it clean. Now we live in the country and am on a well. Still, never a problem with our fresh tank. I suppose we go to enough campgrounds that have treated water (after all the water at public or private businesses do have meet all the environmental standards for human consumption). I think the problem with tanks occur when you KEEP water in the tank. Then there is something to feed algae and mold! Keep it empty and dried out, and there's nothing for yuckies to feed on!
  • I don't think leaving a few gallons in the fresh water tank will serve any purpose. Sanitizing it will be a good idea.

I learned the hard way to take a good bit of water with you even if where you are going has full hookups. Reason #1 is there are times when the park water was "Broken". Reason #2 was when the park water was awful in taste and/or smell.
  • is your tank water chlorinated? I'd just pull the plug and just before your next camping trip, put some more back in, if you are in a FHU site, I'd just put in enough to be able to use the facilities enroute.
