fresh water tank?

Hello all, new to this sight and the whole camping in a travel trailer for that matter. I am going to ask some questons on here I hope im in the correct place to do so.

So I got a 2001 24' Rockwood a month ago from a friend, Its in good shape but the longer ive hade it the more I notice things that I didnt notice before.
ok so I got this trailer home and im screwing around and take off the water fill cap and like a creapy movie about a dozen flies come out. Wtf how did they get there? Is there something dead in the tank? The water didnt smell bad, I havent drank any thing so dont know about the taste, I wont drink from the tap till I know its clean. Hope some one has an idea
thanks
  • Thanks for the replys I will take it appart and clean it out. I found a filter just after the pump so it should trap any particles that I miss
  • Your problem will be if the critters laid eggs . If you can you need to take the end of the fill pipe off the tank. Once off the tank you will need to rinse it out thoroughly to remove any eggs in the filler tubing, then you can sanitize the tank after replacing the tube. When you sanitize see if you can dump water straight to the ground from the tank without going through the pipes or water pump the first time in order to flush eggs out of the tank. The second time then put some heavily bleached water through the pipes
  • use bleach to clean out and sanitize the tank and the water heater and the lines. I think it's 1/2 cup per 15 gallons of water ratio
