Front Ends - Especially Dodge

I just had a complete front end replacement job about 2 years ago. They replaced pretty much everything.

I just brought the truck and camper in to get 4 new tires mounted, balanced and aligned. The take away is I need new CV joints, idler arm, etc, etc... It's all loose again only 2 years later!! Plenty of play in the front wheels.

What the heck is going on?

I read that Dodge pickup trucks are notorious for having problems with the front end, but spending $2000-$3000 every 2 years on front ends seems insane.

What's your experience with this problem? Especially on the vehicle you use to haul your TC?

Also, isn't this extremely dangerous? What if one of these loose CV joints pops out when I'm driving down the highway with the TC?

Can’t say I’ve ever had the problem, but I don’t have a Dodge. I’d probably improve the steering stabilizer or go with a double one.

What year is it? Is it 4x4? SRW or DRW? Are you really overloaded? Are the roads in your area in really bad shape?

2002 Ram 2500 with Arctic Fox TC

2WD extend cab model, 19.5 aluminum rims, not dually

    Cummins, Manual transmission

The rear end is heavily modified with load range G tires on 19.5 aluminum rims, bags, extra leafs in the springs, aftermarket differential, exhaust brake, performance computer, etc.

I also have matching load range G tires and 19.5 aluminum rims on the front as well.

The roads are horrendous everywhere. I travel full time in this thing from California to Miami to Nova Scotia. The roads are particularly bad in NJ and Montreal. It's taken a. beating on those roads. But a new front end already? I've never once had to do a front end on a vehicle I've owned in my entire life. Now 2 in 2 years on this one? I'm confused.

What is the scaled weight on your front axle?? 2002 Ram even a 4X2 will only have a 5,200# front axle rating, QUALITY parts get the best you can.
  • I hope you mean ball joints, there are no CV joints in that truck. You may want a second opinion.

I once took my work truck in to a tire and alignment shop for a front end alignment, where they told me I needed all the front end parts and shocks replaced. I asked the service writer to walk with me out to the truck, where we looked together at all those parts, which were brand new! (Just installed by my mechanic, who did not have an alignment rack)

    Not everyone is honest.
  • My truck is in the shop today for front end issues. 2008 Ram 2500 Diesel. I got to experience the dreaded Dodge death wobble 2 weeks ago.
From what I read in doing my research, use quality parts for replacement and make sure your mechanic knows what a torque wrench is and how to use it.
