Fuel gauge issue

I recently had a new fuel pump assembly installed as my old Dodge left we walking. Now when full, the tank reads almost full, but quickly drops to 7/8, and I assume empty will mean it still has an 1/8 of a tank.

The shop that did the repair is 500 miles away so going back to them is not going to happen. It is a chain/franchise place (Canadian Tire) so I *might* be able to get a local shop of the same brand to help, but haven't looked into that.

Anyway, is there a way (like with a scan tool) to reset the gauge to read full when full and empty when empty?

ON EDIT:
I forgot to mention that after leaving the repair facility and getting up to highway speed, I heard a loud metal scraping sound. Immediately pulled over a saw a fuel tank heat shield had let go - likely wasn't attached properly and it was rubbing the drive shaft. So, for the second time in as many days I was on my back under the truck in the dirt on the side of the freeway. A bungee cord is holding that on for now.

Why didn't I just take it back? Because I was 500 miles from home at 3pm and had to work the next day at 6am which means up at 0430. So 2 hrs sleep for me after getting things unhitched and unpacked.

Then is yours a 34 or a different optional tank?
Sometimes the options are on a label in the glove box.

It's the 34 gal. I have put more than 30 gallons in it at times.

I looked at a couple websites. They donot show 31 gallon but a standard 34 gal

Yes, you are correct. Standard was a 26 US gallon / 98L tank (likely with the 4.7L V8) and optional was the 34 US gallon / 129L. Mine has the bigger tank.

Probably the wrong assembly for your size of tank.
I fought replacement of my sending unit/pump assembly. Had shop modify my old assembly with new pump and sending unit. Factory parts not available, replacement says this is correct unit, Not my unit is 15 inch long, replacement is only 12 inches. That would leave 3-4 inches of fuel in tank.
Is this for your 02 Dodge?

For the 2007 Hemi (in green text, in sig pic), which has a factory optional larger tank. 31 gallons.

  • Well I decided to brave the painful world of the 1-800 customer service line and it was a good experience (so far). I have a "case number" and was told to expect a call in about 5 business days from a automotive specialist CR rep. We shall see.
