The truck, after 800 miles or so of warnings, will simply refuse to start if you don't feed it DEF.
And good luck trying to beat the system, but why would you want to eliminate it?
It contributes to cleaner air, more power AND better fuel economy. (Better at least than the 3 or 4 years of trucks with regen systems prior to DEF introduction. Older, pre-2007, trucks may still be as economical as the new ones).
Improved enough to more than outweigh the minor cost of the fluid.
Top off the DEF tank when you change the engine oil and you will be all set.
It's not a big deal.
