Fuel mileage

I have searched for answers in various forums but most are out of date or full of trolls/debates. We are looking at purchasing a heavy duty truck for towing a new fifth wheel. The fifth wheel will be on the lighter side. I just would like simple answers - what fuel mileage do you get with a heavy duty gasser or if you drive a diesel, what mileage do you get while towing. No debates please, just answers.

  • The easy answer is around 9 mpg for gas, around 12 mpg for diesel. Nearly all new truck/5-ver combos will be within 1 mpg either way.

Diesel will get about 25-30% better mileage.

You don't buy a diesel for the mileage, you buy it for the power.

Going slow will increase your mileage.

Finally, if you're that concerned about fuel economy, you should forget the RV and stay in nice hotels.
