Full Disclosure-Total Newbie! Starting "the Plan" :)
Hello everyone!
My husband and I have just begun to plan for our RVing future, went to our first RV show last weekend and have begun the discussion of what kind of RV will we begin with. With a daughter who still needs post graduate financial assistance and DH's retirement 2-3 years out (I am retiring to part time work this year) we are looking at three-four years before we take the plunge and buy. We are planning on renting an RV for a few weekend trips to get an idea of what we want to focus on.
My husband is a bit leery (OK a lot leery) of pulling a TT, but after looking at the show, it seems that you get a lot of bang for the buck with that category. My family pulled a 20 ft. Aristocrat back in the 70's (loved, loved, loved that trailer! so many memories!) but my dad is a different animal than my dearly beloved. Nothing fazes that man! How are the TT's of today in terms of sway? Has it improved at all?
Is my husband worried more than he should be? Do dealers allow you test drive their models to see if such fears can be allayed? He has said he didn't know if he could learn to finagle his way into campsites with this type of trailer. I wonder if even a small Class A might pose the same problem, especially if we had to pull a small car.
We looked at Class C's, but I didn't care as much for inside layouts of them, 5th wheelers, same feeling, small Class A's like the Winnebago Brave, which were awesome but then you don't have a car to drive, and then the TT's. We would most likely be starting out doing weekly type trips along the Eastern coast, but I could also see us doing a long one out west--never been there.
My husband's current Chevy 4 door Colorado truck has over 120K miles on it,so we would be buying a family vehicle to use (regardless of the TT plan), so factoring in something that would be comfortable to drive in for a long distance, with a dog, the two of us and a not too big TT is what I am looking into.
Any suggestions on well- made, well-laid out, not too cumbersome TT brands for us to look at? When I was young and with my folks, we always dreamed of some day having an Airstream....Are they today as coveted as they were back in the day? Anyway, thank you all so much for reading through my first post! I look forward to hearing your thoughts and opinions!
