I am so happy for you and your decision to enjoy retirement by seeing this great country in an RV!
Airstreams are VERY fine travel trailers and they are worthy of their reputation for longevity. Keep in mind that this longevity generally refers to the structure of the trailer, the walls and framing. However, airstreams are not immune to the wear and tear on their components (fridge, AC, furnace...styling...couch cushions...etc)... And over time some of the rivets can work lose some and leak. Not s huge deal but something to be aware of. The AIR forums are a great resource for airstream fans and owners.
Just something to be aware of, Airstreams are not always as roomy as a conventional box travel trailer ft for ft. Mostly because Airstreams don't typically have slide outs.
Start reading and studying now, that way you can get a well matched combo of Travel Trailer and Tow Vehicle.
Visit some RV dealers and get a feel for what you like...if you find a floor plan you like go to the RV dealer and hang out in the unit for 20 minutes or so and see if it will work in real life for you. You may find a small unit is perfect...or the 30 plus footer is what you want.
With a well matched trailer and tow vehicle, proper loading of both, and a good weight distribution hitch you will have a very enjoyable time RV'ing.
Longer trailers back up easier ;)
Thanks!
