My thought on this is to get a large truck and and largest TC available. This would put you in a Class 5 truck and triple slide TC about 25' overall in length. This is still very maneuverable compared to the smallest Super C available. You really need this class of vehicle due to the payload and towing capacity - Although you can go smaller with camper or truck, your chance of liking the experience will get squeezed along with that smaller size. Forget about accessing low narrow tunnels within parks with anything but a mini truck and a pop-up, so you still need to consider a small nimble vehicle you can use for day excursions (motorcycle/trike, Smart car, VW Manx).
We want the TC to be nimble, and we are willing to sacrifice some comfort because we will also have the TT as our "home" when ever we want. I think its kinda pointless to have a big TC and a TT. Or did you mean don't use TT at all?
Oh low and narrow tunnels... Are those common within national parks?
Since you plan to full time and will have high resource usage, an enclosed trailer that becomes your office/family room, power source and garage now can become an extension of your living space. This is where you can carry a large sealed battery bank, rooftop solar, forced AC and heating, large capacity refrigerator, big screen TV and comfortable seating. Look at some of the cargo trailer conversions at http://www.tnttt.com/ and then check out Boatycall's and bka0721's trailers to see what is possible with power generation and capture. The type of vehicle I suggested will only take 1/2 to 1/3 of a 20' trailer, so some living/working space will still be available without pulling it out - When the vehicle is parked outside, you will have more practical inside space than any travel trailer. I am working on more power storage in my trailer and already carry additional LPG, gasoline, water and holding tanks for extended boondocking, but multiple toys take the majority of my trailer space and don't sit outside unless being used.
Will definitely look into this, thanks. Wow, that's a whole new forum... :)
When traveling, only you or your wife will have to drive one vehicle that will be under 50' in combined length. This will allow you to fit many pull through camp sites without unhitching or you will be able to fit in a double wide 25' site with everything right at hand.
I know you have been planning the logistics of this setup for some time, but I see too much dedicated redundancy instead of multi use functionality. I'm not thinking out of the box, but how to reuse the same box for multiple purposes...
You have some interesting proposals here - I'll definitely look into these possibilities. Thank you!
