Funky Smell

Recently I have noticed a "funky smell" when I shut down the engine in my pickup. I don't notice it until I open the door of the truck and step out. I don't really know how to describe it, but seems that I have smelled it before, though not in connection with my truck. Any ideas? It is a 2001 Dodge Cummins turbo diesel with about 140000 miles. It still runs great, just this smell after stopping.

Have you emptied the "puke bottle"?

Aka - crankcase ventilation catch bottle?

X2 and change the crack case filter at the same time.

Maybe the front engine seal is leaking and you're smelling oil or your injetors are a little worn and you're smelling raw fuel .... the again it could be the neighbor's cat pissed on your tires. Time for a new truck.
  • Lift pump leaking? I always ran hypouron in my 03 once I used assuron it stank till I changed back to the hypouron. Hypouron is synthetic blend and assuron is conventional oil.? Just a thought.
  • Just thinking outside the box here:

I drive a dodge diesel and use Shell Rotella 15w40 oil in my truck and farm tractor.

I have read on other forms about Rotella oil having a smell.

I have never notice the smell, but it was said that the raw product can have an unpleasant odor. It does not hurt the oil, but some do not like the smell.

I have never noticed a strong odor from the oil, but it might be the case for you.

guess you could pull the dip stick out and take a sniff.

my dealer did say that shell had reduced the zinc content in shell rotella oil and that is making it smell for me.

others are changing to delo 400 as their oil still has the higher level of zinc. do not know that for sure as I have not been able to determine zinc levels by my research.
if anyone knows let me know the link:
