- K-9_HANDLERExplorerSo the answer to the OPs original question looks to be No.
- Grit_dogNavigator^ Yeah, not sure how many of them are out in the wild yet.
Power numbers are a decent bump, right in the hunt between the Ram and the Ford.
6 speed will be the Achilles heel for how it stacks up against the competition.
Similar poor decision there like Ram still running a 6 er behind the diesel.
Guess if they're still selling enough trucks, no need to upgrade their offerings just yet.
Side note, I thought the 7.3 Ford was supposed to blow the doors off the other 2 in power numbers? Maybe Ford's sandbagging for an upcoming 1 up the competition, competition? - Dave_H_MExplorer IINo experience here, gonna keep the 6.2 Ford.
I keep wondering about the gas consumption on these new mountain motors. - ksssExplorerI have to believe that the 10 speed will soon find its way behind the 6.6 gas motor. It seems to baffle the entire automotive industry as to why they didnt release it with the 10 to begin with. At least with Ram, I dont think they yet have a 10 speed. GM has them sitting on the shelf and yet they continue with the 6 speed.

My thoughts as well. There’s really no reason not to not use the new 10 speed, unless they want to get rid of some excess 6 speed autos hanging on the benches. Hopefully the new 10 speed series will make up for the 3:73 gear set. Still wish they would have used the 4:10. I have the 6.0 with the 3:73 gear set and 6 speed. Love it, pulls 10k very well. I’m sure the new 10 speed with the 6.6 would be a nice pull dog though. - Grit_dogNavigator

Rams doing the same game with the "old" transmissions behind their diesels too.
I surmise that it's more about future sales than current capability. If one is in a pattern of increasing market share (like ram, idk about GM gassers) or already has a big marketing point for the year "The new 6.6 Duragas!!", then why show all your cards up front, when next year or the year after you can have another big marketing release. "Now with the new Turbo Hydramatic TH1000 transmission!!" - ksssExplorerYou may be right. I guess my issue would be with the fact that the Duragas with the 6 speed and 3:73's is retarding what should have been a very positive rollout of a long awaited replacement powerplant for the 6.0. At least with Ram, their diesel is powerful enough to still be competetive with fewer grears. Gas engines have a harder time solving drivetrain shortcomings through pure power. Much like the Ram 6.4 and it its tranny gearing issues. Sure in a couple years they can put a 10 in the Duragas and create more excitement, but I think they overly crippled this new truck by not reaching far enough.
- wowens79Explorer IIIThat 6spd has probably cost them a sale to me. I’ve got an early 6.0 that has been a great truck, but it does struggle with our camper. I held off on buying a truck for 2 years to see what the new one had to offer. I’d checked out the Ram 6.4 in case my truck died, and read about their gear selection issues, then when the Chevy 6.6 came out I was disappointed that it had the 6spd.
After reading forums and watching reviews everyone is raving about how much improvement the 8spd made in the Ram, and I’m beginning to hear things about the Chevy 6spd year selection.
I test drove both last week, and the Ram 8spd felt much better, and I liked the interior better. I really wanted to love the Chevy since my current one I’ve had for 17 years, and 238k miles of reliable service. I feel guilty leaving Chevy, but at this point I will probably go with the Ram. - Grit_dogNavigator

Oh, I agree 100% with what you're saying. It makes no sense to me either.
But neither did Dodge keeping an anemic 4 speed behind the Cummins for years while the others had 5 and 6 cogs.
Or similar to the diesel power wars. Why bump 10-20-50 ft lbs or hp every other or 3rd year when they could have pumped up the Dmax or Cummins to basically where they are at now today, reliably 15 years ago?
Been reliably running a tuned LB7 and now a tuned 5.9 reliably for many years and many miles. Both were/are not over the top mods, but both have the same power or more than the new trucks with no expensive or complicated failures due to the power and certainly within the realm of the OEMs to build to support the power even back in the day.
It's marketing and economics, not what is the end all beat all for one year.
I'll bet the majority of truck owners (fleets included) don't nerd out or obsess over the number like some of us. For the majority's, the bro who can tell his neighbor his new ____ has 10hp more than the neighbors truck is good enough. - mkirschNomad IIConsidering that the engine was just introduced for the 2020 model year, and didn't hit the lots until after the camping season was pretty much over, and it's currently JANUARY, I sincerely doubt there are many with towing experience yet. After Memorial Day you'll likely find a lot more feedback.
