Like I said, the word motor is all inclusive. I can call a gasoline engine a motor but I can't call an electric motor an engine.
You might show your instructor the following:
mo·tor
/?m?t?r/

A machine, esp. one powered by electricity or internal combustion, that supplies motive power for a vehicle or for some other device... :)
How about hydraulic motors? What does your dictionary say about them?
My instructors were not wrong, in aviation the the term motor is never used to describe powerplants. Gas turbine motor. I don' t think so.
